Valle Nevado Opens First Resort Gondola in Chile
Looking to ride a gondola to the slopes in Chile? Now you can. Valle Nevado opened Chile’s first ski resort gondy in March, with the official christening on the opening day of the ski season, June 28.
Los Angeles Time | Skiing: Come summer, South America beckons
With April right around the corner, the ski season will soon be winding down in the West. Which means most schussers and shredders will be packing away their gear and turning to other sports such as cycling or surfing –- maybe even golf.
But come July, in the middle of the North American summer, snow will be falling on the dozen-plus ski and snowboard resorts in the Andes of South America, which range from the huge Las Lenas in Argentina to the more boutiquey Portillo resort near Santiago, Chile. Some of them rival the best ski areas in the United States, with vertical descents of up to 4,000 feet.

Hit the slopes when everyone else is hitting the beach
It was August, the last month of summer vacation in the United States, and here I was… snow skiing in fresh powder.
This felt like many other major ski resorts as I popped over moguls, carved powder turns down a wide intermediate slope, then picked which high-speed lift to take based on an intricate trail map. There was one key difference: I was returning to my hotel room in a city of 7 million after the slopes closed. And I’d be there in time for dinner.

Valle Nevado , Chile
Serious skiers know the season doesn’t end come summertime. It just shifts south of the equator. Come August, Valle Nevado Ski Resort, 35 miles northeast of Santiago, is blanketed in deep powder. Newer than the storied Chilean resort of Portillo, Valle Nevado has all the bells and whistles of most modern mountains, including the only high-speed quad lift in South America, a brand new gondola and an onsite heli-pad.

Day Four: Valle Nevado : Ski (and Apres Ski) in Valle Nevado
It’s hard to believe that a ski resort exists just an hour’s drive from Santiago. Valle Nevado is where locals go to shred snow in the Andes. The resort comprises three hotels (three-star, four-star and five-star), most equipped with free Wi-Fi access and breathtaking views of the towering slopes. After a long day of snow-bound activities, chill in the outdoor hot tub with a Cerveza Grassau (the local Chilean beer) and watch a glowing sunset.

Santiago
Calamity came calling to Chile, first through an 8.8-magnitude earthquake and later when 33 miners were trapped in the country’s north. With the world watching, Chile displayed its defiant optimism, and these experiences have seemed to ignite a seismic shift in the capital. Culture and sports have come to the fore and new museums have opened to acclaim. Dining is now top-notch, nightlife exhilarating and this year also marks the inauguration of the tallest building on the continent, the 70-storey Torre Gran Costanera. Day trippers can scale an Andean peak in summer, ski its powder-clad slopes in July, or cycle through the idyllic vineyards of the Casablanca, Maipo and Colchagua valleys. Visit Santiago and you’ll feel the buzz.

As a ski destination, Chile has it all and now it’s getting more

Luxury Latinamerica
Close to Santiago but feeling a million miles away, Chile’s premier ski resort offers long cruising trails, bone-jarring mogul runs, and a snowboard park. Plus you can venture into a whole backcountry playground easily reached by helicopter….
So it’s possible to come here just for the day, but a better option is to make reservations at the slopesideValle Nevado Hotel. Remodeled in 2010, it’s contemporary but comfortable, with pampering rooms, a heated outdoor pool and the area’s best restaurant facing the slopes. Package rates are a great value, including lift tickets, two meals, Wi-Fi, and day care for the kids if needed.
